People to Whom Allah Does not Grant Maghfarat A large majority of those who call themselves Muslims put too much emphasis on the fact that Allah is Ghafoor-ur-Raheem. There is no doubt about that. But just emphasizing this attributes of Allah and not taking into account the criteria that Allah has set for granting maghfarat and rahmat, the so-called Muslims have become complacent and do little good deeds in the hope of forgiveness or maghfarat. This attitude is very dangerous and has proved devastating not only in this life (in that, majority of the Muslims of today lack good character) but also is bound to achieve nothing but a hellish life in the hereafter. An earlier part of this article presented some criteria given in the Quran according to which Allah grants maghfarat. This article presents some of the verses which outline characteristics of people to whom Allah does not grant maghfarat. Firstly, it must be borne in mind that Allah has at His Command not only maghfarat but also a most grievous penalty. 41:43 ....thy lord has at his Command maghfarat as well as a most Grievous Penalty. Allah does not grant maghfarat to those who do not believe and do not do deeds of righteousness 35:7 For those who reject Allah, (deny His Laws and Commands, and remiss or fall short in following His Commands), is a terrible Penalty: but for those who believe and work righteous deeds, is maghfarat, and a magnificent Reward. In the above verse (35:7), Kufr has been used against imaan (belief) and doing deeds of righteousness. It is clear from the verse that those who believe and do deeds of righteousness will be granted maghfarat and those who do not do so will not be granted maghfarat. Other meanings of Kufr include: to disbelieve in Allah, Prophets, Malaika, Divine Books, Aakhrat, Al-Ghaib; to fall short or remiss in carrying out assigned duties; to deny; to disacknowledge Allah's favours and blessings; to hide the Truth; to hide the blessings of Allah from others and do not leave them open for the welfare of others. Allah does not grant maghfarat to those who persist in Kufr 4:137 Surely (as for) those who believe then disbelieve, again believe and again disbelieve, then increase in disbelief, Allah will not grant them maghfarat nor guide them in the (right) path. Allah does not grant maghfarat to those who do Kufr and turn away from Allah's way 47:34 Surely those who disbelieve and turn away from Allah's way, then they die while they are unbelievers, Allah will by no means grant them maghfarat . Allah does not grant maghfarat to those who do Kufr and act unjustly 4:168 Surely (as for) those who disbelieve and act unjustly Allah will not forgive them nor guide them to a path Allah does not grant maghfarat to those who commit Shirk 4:48 Surely Allah does not grant maghfarat to that anything should be associated with Him, and grants maghfarat what is besides that to whomsoever His Law of Causation or mashiyyat necessitates; and whoever associates anything with Allah, he devises indeed a great sin. 4:116 Surely Allah does not grant maghfarat to that anything should be associated with Him, and He grants maghfarat what is besides this to whom His Law of Causation or mashiyyat necessitates; and whoever associates anything with Allah, he indeed strays off into a remote error. It is very important to know that according to the Quran, Shirk is not just worshipping idols. Most so-called Muslims commit shirk of one kind or the other. See the following verse: 012:106 And most of them believe not in Allah without doing SHIRK! There are many forms of shirk alluded to in the Quran and one must be careful not to commit shirk in any of these forms. The forms of shirk include: 1. Taking human beings from among ourselves as Lords or Patrons besides Allah [3:64] 2. Taking angels or Prophets as Lords or Patrons besides Allah [3:80] 3. Taking Ahbaar and Rahbaan (religious authorities) as Lords and Patrons besides Allah [9:31, 9:34, 12:39] 4. Worshipping, obeying and adoring [IBADAT of] anything besides Allah [4:36, 18:110, 24:55] 5. Taking Masters [Wali] other than Allah [6:14] 6. Taking ILAH other than Allah [6:19] 7. Taking Jinns as partners of Allah [6:100] 8. Obeying devil-inspired people [6:121] 9. Calling upon others [graves, mystics, saints, idols, etc.] besides Allah for help [7:189-198, 28:87-88, 34:22] 10. To ascribe Allah’s partners in His Kingship or dominion [maalikiyyat] [17:111, 25:2] 11. To ascribe Allah’s partners in His Command or Rule [Hukm] [18:26] 12. To ascribe Allah’s partners in His Lordship [Raboobiyyat] [18:38, 18:42, 72:2, 72:20] 13. To be divided into sects [30:31-32] 14. Failing to establish the Just Economic System of Zakat [41:6-7] 15. To follow low human desires or evil inclinations that are against the Quran [25:43, 45:23] 16. Indulgence in Fawahish [7:33]. It is because the devil commands to indulge in Fawahish [2:169, 2:268, 24:21], whereas Allah forbids to indulge in Fawahish [7:28, 16:90]. When one goes for Fawahish, one follows the devil instead of following Allah. That is how one commits Shirk. If Allah's Law of Mashiyyat or causation does not necessitate, then even the prayers of the Prophet cannot bring maghfarat 63:6 It is alike to them whether you beg forgiveness for them or do not beg forgiveness for them; Allah will never forgive them; surely Allah does not guide the transgressing people. 9:80 Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will not forgive them; this is because they disbelieve in Allah and His Messenger, and Allah does not guide the transgressing people. 9:114 And Abraham prayed for his father's forgiveness only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah, he dissociated himself from him: for Abraham was most tender-hearted, forbearing. The only way to have maghfarat is to desist from Kufr (and Shirk of all kinds) and become a true believer and do deeds of righteousness. 8:38 Say to those who disbelieve, if they desist, that which is past shall be forgiven to them; and if they return, then what happened to the ancients has already passed. 35:7 For those who reject Allah, (deny His Laws and Commands, and remiss or fall short in following His Commands), is a terrible Penalty: but for those who believe and work righteous deeds, is maghfarat, and a magnificent Reward.
